The operating condition

Cotswold brash.

Fifteen to forty-five centimetres of stony, alkaline soil over limestone. It drains beautifully, holds almost no water, and is the reason a dry April costs more here than anywhere else in the rotation.

The constraint

Why the soil decides everything.

Every agronomic argument on this farm resolves back to the same fact: there is not much soil, and what there is does not hold water.

That is why spring barley outperforms second wheat here. It is why cover crops, min-till and building organic matter matter more than they would on deep Fenland silt — because on brash, every additional gram of organic matter is water-holding capacity you did not have before.

And it is why the 2025 drought did what it did. Thirty per cent less wheat. Forty per cent less barley. Durum under two tonnes a hectare against an expected six. On deeper ground the same weather would have been a bad year. Here it was a loss.

The long game

What actually improves it.

Cover cropping

Something green in the ground over winter. Builds organic matter, holds soil in place, and is funded by agri-environment schemes.

Minimum tillage

Less inversion, more structure, better water retention. Slower to show results than anybody would like.

Grass-clover leys

Nitrogen fixed for free, and a rest for ground that has been in cereals too long.

Precision liming

The soil is already alkaline. Blanket liming here is money set on fire; variable-rate is not.

Drainage in the valley bottoms

Site-specific, expensive, and the only thing that fixes waterlogging.

Time

Soil organic matter moves slowly. Anybody promising a fast result is selling something.
