English wine is not a joke any more.
For most of the last century, English wine was something you were polite about. That has changed, comprehensively, and the reason is the same reason the Champagne houses have been quietly buying land in Kent: the chalk is right and the climate has moved.
Firelight is a Pinot Noir from the Crouch Valley in Essex — loganberry, dark cherry, raspberry. Arrowhead is Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay from Kent, Essex and Suffolk, and tastes of honeysuckle, white peach and Golden Delicious. Midsummer is a dry, ruby-tinged rosé from five Kent vineyards, and it is a wonderful temptress.
