Private hire

The short answer is no.

No weddings, no wakes, no corporate functions and no large parties. We are aware this is unusual and we are not going to change it.

The reasoning

Why a pub this popular turns down the easiest money there is.

A wedding at this pub would be straightforward to sell and enormously profitable. So would a corporate away-day. Both would also mean closing the building to everybody who drove here hoping for a pint.

The moment a pub starts taking private hire, its calendar begins to fill with events rather than customers, and the regulars learn not to bother. It happens slowly and it is irreversible. So the answer is no, permanently, to everybody, including people we like.

Or just book a table.

Up to eight people, on the first of the month.

Wondering

What people actually ask.

The two questions this page gets most, answered without a support ticket.

Tables release on the first of the month for the whole of the following month, online only. There is no telephone. There never was.

Every ingredient on the menu is from these islands. It is the whole point of the place, and it is the reason there is no lemon in the gin and tonic.

Snooping, briefly.

We use a small number of cookies to keep your basket upright and to work out which pages people actually read. We do not sell anything about you to anyone, because that would be a rotten way to behave.
