Chapter 49 · Schooling

Schooling.

Education, and being schooled. What six years of doing this expensively and in public actually taught us, arranged so somebody else can do it less expensively.

The differentiator

Fail Farm: the course nobody else will run.

Every agronomy course, every farming YouTube channel and every agricultural college teaches you what to do. Almost none of them teach what happens when it does not work, because the sponsors are uncomfortable and the lecturer has a reputation.

This farm has an unusual advantage: its entire public identity is built on honest failure. The first commercial batch of lager was thrown away. A batch of cider was recalled with a statement beginning "we completely cocked up". The farming has lost money in most years it has been documented.

So the failure archive is free, it is detailed, and it is the most useful thing on this website. Knowing what went wrong here will save somebody else more money than knowing what went right.

The estate list

Take the field guide first.

Thirty pages, free, and genuinely quite funny in places. What a thousand acres actually costs, what it grows, and why the farming loses money every single year.

  • Thirty pages, free, no catch
  • The real numbers, published
  • And the fortnightly newsletter, if you want it

Wondering

What people actually ask.

The two questions this page gets most, answered without a support ticket.

No. Every course starts from the assumption that you have never held a soil auger, because most people have not.

It is not. It is what six years of expensive mistakes taught us, written down so you can make cheaper ones.

Snooping, briefly.

We use a small number of cookies to keep your basket upright and to work out which pages people actually read. We do not sell anything about you to anyone, because that would be a rotten way to behave.
