Small, intensive, high value

The Market Garden.

A small area of intensive vegetable growing for the shop and the café. Not a commercial vegetable operation — an area where high-value crops justify the labour that commodity cereals never can.

The detail

What actually happens with it.

A small area of intensive vegetable growing for the shop and the café. Not a commercial vegetable operation — an area where high-value crops justify the labour that commodity cereals never can.

This is the only kind of controlled-environment or intensive growing that makes sense here. Vertical farming, on the other hand, is a sector graveyard and we have no intention of going near it.

The year

Drilled

Autumn or spring, depending on the year.

Grown

On Cotswold brash over limestone.

Harvested

Weather permitting, which is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Sold

As something worth more than the raw crop.

What it looks like

The field this comes out of, in the season it looks best. It does not look like this in February.

Watch it grow.

The field cameras run all year, including the eleven months when nothing happens.

Wondering

What people actually ask.

The two questions this page gets most, answered without a support ticket.

Not on foot, most of the year — it is a working farm with machinery in it. The cameras, the virtual walk and the footpaths are the honest alternatives.

The farming does not. It made a hundred and forty-four pounds in its first year and has rarely done much better. Everything else on this site exists because of that.

The estate list

Get told before everyone else

One email a fortnight about what is actually happening in the fields, the brewery and the pub — including the bits that went wrong.

The honest bit

Everything on this site is a demonstration build. The pages are real, the words are ours, and the checkout takes no money.

Snooping, briefly.

We use a small number of cookies to keep your basket upright and to work out which pages people actually read. We do not sell anything about you to anyone, because that would be a rotten way to behave.
