Why the Shop Is Card Only

The single most common source of doorstep disappointment, and the reasons for it.

Both the farm shop and the pub shop are card only, and somebody is disappointed by this every single day.

The reasons are dull and good. Cash handling at a rural site means a physical cash journey, insurance, and a member of staff counting a till instead of serving. Card-only queues move measurably faster, which on a site that sometimes has a queue out of the door is not a small thing. And reconciliation that used to take an hour a day takes minutes.

The cost is real: it excludes anybody without a card, which is a genuine access issue rather than a hypothetical one. We think the trade is right and we would rather state the trade than pretend there is not one.

Wondering

What people actually ask.

The two questions this page gets most, answered without a support ticket.

Ask first. We will almost always say yes and we will always want a link.

It is written for the estate, from the fields rather than from a desk, and it argues rather than announces.

Snooping, briefly.

We use a small number of cookies to keep your basket upright and to work out which pages people actually read. We do not sell anything about you to anyone, because that would be a rotten way to behave.
