Shareable failure

The game makes a short film of the moment it went wrong.

Composed automatically from the season record, saved to your farm, and posted nowhere unless you post it. It is the sharing mechanic for a game whose defining stage is failure, and it works precisely because the admission is voluntary.

Worth saying out loud

Four reels, as they would be composed.

Each card carries the season, the number and the cause. None of them carries a score, a rank or an invitation to install anything.

Season 4

Gone by November

The rape, and the flea beetle

The Diddly Squat Estate
In-game November Because a field that looked perfect in September was bare eight weeks later, and that is genuinely what happens.
Season 6

Four days late

The flag leaf, and 1.4 tonnes

The Diddly Squat Estate
In-game May The clearest lesson in the game, and the one that hurts most because it is entirely your fault.
Season 7

21 millimetres

June rainfall, and nothing to be done

The Diddly Squat Estate
In-game June Because about a third of failures have no lesson in them at all, and pretending otherwise would be the bigger lie.
Season 9

Thirty-four per cent over

Alan, and the restored barn

The Diddly Squat Estate
In-game March The overrun mechanic, doing exactly what it was designed to do, to somebody who had not kept a reserve.

A reel is composed from the season record the moment a failure resolves, saved to the player’s own farm, and shared only by a deliberate act. It is never posted automatically and there is no setting that makes it automatic.

The specification

What a reel actually contains.

The composition

Length
8–14 secondsLong enough to carry a number and a cause, short enough to be watched.
Source
The season recordEstablishment counts, the decision log, the weather record and the field state. No live capture of anything.
The number
Always presentA reel without a number is a mood board. The number is the thing that makes it worth watching.
The cause
Present where there is oneAnd where there is not, it says so — about a third of the time.
Rendered
On the device, from the recordNothing is uploaded to compose it, and nothing about the farm leaves the device unless the player shares.

What it never contains

Any other player
NeverA reel is about your farm. Nobody else appears in one, by name or otherwise.
A real name or location
NeverA farm name and a season number. That is the whole identity surface.
A store link or an install prompt
NeverA share card that is an advertisement is not a share card, and people can tell instantly.
A score, a rank or a comparison
NeverBecause a leaderboard on a failure is a competition to have failed most impressively.
Anything about a child
NeverSharing is off by default for any account below the age threshold and cannot be turned on.
The argument

Why the failure is the shareable moment and the success is not.

Because nobody shares a good harvest. A screenshot of a number going up is the least interesting artefact any game produces, and every publisher who has built a share button for one has watched it go unused.

A failure with a cause and a number attached is a story, and it is a story with a self-deprecating shape that people are already comfortable telling. "I was four days late with the flag leaf spray and it cost me a tonne and a half" is a thing somebody will actually send to a friend.

It is also the only sharing mechanic that fits this brand. The cider recall on this farm was announced with a statement beginning "we completely cocked up" and sales rose afterwards. A share button on top of a boast would be the wrong programme.

Five steps

How a reel gets made, and what happens to it.

A failure resolves

The flea beetle, the missed window, the drought, the overrun. Anything the season record can explain.

The game composes a reel

On the device, from the record. Eight to fourteen seconds, with the number and the cause.

It is saved to your farm

In a reel archive that only you can see, kept until you delete it, and never rotated out.

You share it, or you do not

A deliberate act, every time. There is no automatic posting and no setting that enables one.

Nothing is measured about who saw it

No attribution, no install tracking, no referral reward. A share that pays you is an advertisement you were bribed to make.

Sharing is off by default for any account below the age threshold

And it cannot be enabled. A child’s farm composes reels and keeps them in the archive; it does not get a share button. That follows directly from the Children’s Code requirement that geolocation and sharing default to off and that nudge techniques towards lower privacy are restricted.

Wondering

Reels, questioned.

Never. A reel is composed and saved. Sharing it is a deliberate act every single time and there is no setting that automates it.

No. No currency, no XP, no cosmetic and no referral credit. A share that pays you is an advertisement you were bribed to make, and people can tell.

No. A reel is about your farm and nobody else is in it, named or otherwise.

The weather in them is real.

The in-game sky is driven by actual Oxfordshire data, on a delay, for four reasons.

Snooping, briefly.

We use a small number of cookies to keep your basket upright and to work out which pages people actually read. We do not sell anything about you to anyone, because that would be a rotten way to behave.
