Parishing

From joining to standing in a hall.

You are placed, roughly.

A postcode puts you in the nearest parish. Roughly, because the boundaries are drawn round landscapes rather than counties and landscapes do not respect postcodes.

If it puts you in the wrong one, one tap moves you. About four hundred members have done that and nobody has ever been asked to justify it.

You read for a while.

Most people lurk for two or three months, which is normal and healthy. The register, the minutes, the lending list and the diary are all readable from the first day.

Nobody is prompted, nudged or emailed about their engagement. There is no onboarding sequence, because a community with an onboarding sequence is a funnel.

Eventually you turn up.

Average attendance is thirty-one. The first time is the difficult one, which is why nine of the twelve parishes ask a member to meet newcomers at the door.

And then it is a room full of people who have the same problems as you, which is the entire product and always was.

One warden has been stood down by their own parish, in April 2025, for repeatedly cancelling meets at two days’ notice. The parish decided it, not us, and that is the design working.

The thinking

Why the cadence is not ours to set.

The obvious thing to do with twelve regional groups is to standardise them. One night a month, one format, one agenda template, so the whole thing can be reported on a single slide.

The Borders would have died in a year. Half that parish drives ninety miles to a meet, and twelve short evenings a year is a worse offer than four proper days. The Marches voted itself down to six meets a year and its attendance went up. The Downs never found a hall and stopped looking, and its twenty-six walks have a cancellation record of zero.

None of those three would have happened under a standard format, and all three are among the best parishes on the register. The lesson is not complicated: the people in the room know more about the room than we do.
