Everything British, including the tonic

The Pub.

The Farmer’s Dog, which is five miles down the road and not on this walk in any honest geographical sense. It is here because it is where the whole thing ends up, and because the rule it runs on is the most interesting rule on the estate.

On the walk

What is here.

Every ingredient on that menu is from these islands. Not mostly, not wherever practical — every one. It is the whole proposition of the place, and it is the reason there is no lemon in the gin and tonic and no pepper on the table.

That rule is harder than the sixteen-mile rule at the shop, because a shop can decline to stock a thing and a kitchen has to build a plate out of what remains. Removing citrus from a British pub menu takes out about a third of the obvious answers.

Tables release on the first of the month for the whole of the following month, online only. There is no telephone. There never was, and the reason is written down rather than implied.

What happened here.
A screen-printed plate rather than a photograph. Every illustration on this walk is drawn in the estate palette, for reasons set out in How It Was Made.
The record

What happened here.

The pub was bought in 2024 and opened that August, reported at around a million pounds before a refurbishment that nobody has published a figure for. It was Chapter 26 — Pubbing — and the production files called it exactly that.

The garden bars are walk-in and always have been. The restaurant is not, and pretending otherwise only produces a queue of disappointed people who have driven a long way.

Costs are indicative ranges for work of this kind in this part of the country, not invoices. Where a figure is a published estate number rather than a general one, it says so in the row.

On the walk

What to look at, while you are here.

The pass

Overhead camera, service hours only, and no customer ever in frame.

The bar

Everything on it British, including the tonic, which is the difficult one.

The dogs

Welcome throughout, with no curfew, unlike the children.

The booking window

First of the month, for the following month, online only.

The plate

The Pub, in the season it looks best. It does not look like this in February, and the walk changes plates when the real season at OX7 does.

Watch this bit live instead.

There is a camera on or near this stop, running all year, with no audio and no zoom.

We use a small number of cookies to keep your basket upright and to work out which pages people actually read. We do not sell anything about you to anyone, because that would be a rotten way to behave.
