The archive

Every result, including the ones that failed.

An auction archive containing only successes is a marketing page. This one has the unsold lots in it, the one that was withdrawn, and the two that went for considerably less than anybody expected.

The reading

What the results actually say.

PatternThe evidenceWhat we take from it
Access beats objects The three experience lots averaged 114 per cent over reserve; the objects averaged 46 per cent People want the day, not the thing
Produce does badly A tonne of feed barley found two bids and did not sell Nobody wants a tonne of anything. Scale it down
Firsts hold up The first crate off two separate lines both cleared reserve comfortably Number one of anything is a category of its own
Nature is a hard sell at auction Twenty metres of hedge cleared reserve by twenty per cent, against eight bids It works far better as a fixed-price adoption than as a lot
Small reserves attract more bidders The two lots with reserves under £500 drew the most bidders A high reserve is a fence, and people can see it
Cocking up

The one we withdrew.

In June 2025 a pair of weaner pigs was listed for a smallholder. Halfway through the week it became clear that we had not asked enough questions about where they were going, and that the answer we did have was not good enough.

The lot was withdrawn with two days to run, every bid was voided, and everybody who had bid was told why. It cost us about eleven hundred pounds and a certain amount of embarrassment.

Live animals are not listed here any more. That is not a policy written after careful deliberation; it is a policy written after getting it wrong in public.

The rules

Increments, extensions, and the awkward cases.

Questions

The archive, questioned.

Because the pattern in the failures is more useful than the pattern in the successes, and because an archive that hides them cannot be trusted on the ones it shows.

In this build, no — they are illustrative. In a real version they would be persistent per account and never resolvable to a name.

Across these nine lots there were eight different winners, which is roughly what you would want and not what most people assume.

Snooping, briefly.

We use a small number of cookies to keep your basket upright and to work out which pages people actually read. We do not sell anything about you to anyone, because that would be a rotten way to behave.
