Agricultural research needs real farms and real farms rarely give access, because access costs yield and produces nothing. This one has an unusual reason to say yes: the results are content, and the content is the business.

What the farm would actually be useful for.
Long-run work on thin calcareous soils, which are under-represented in British trial data because they are commercially marginal and nobody wants to run a five-year trial on ground that barely pays.
Blackgrass, which is the most economically significant weed in British arable farming and where the genuinely useful questions are about drilling date, rotation and cultivation rather than about chemistry — all of which need real fields over real years rather than pot trials.
And the thing almost no trial ever captures, which is the financial outcome. Agricultural research reports yield and rarely reports gross margin, because most trial sites have no meaningful accounts attached. This one publishes its accounts already.

Year one — the baseline
Soil, worms, organic matter, blackgrass counts, and a proper survey of what is actually there.
Years one to five — the trial
Drilling date and rotation, replicated, on ground where the answer genuinely matters.

Gross margin per plot, which is the number almost no trial reports.
Year three — the first paper
Peer reviewed, published by the university, and written about here afterwards rather than before.
Year five — the protocol updates
Or does not, if the result says it should not.
The measurable thing that already happened.
UCAS applications from eighteen-year-olds to agriculture and food-related degrees rose to around nine thousand four hundred, up about twenty per cent on 2019, and the Royal Agricultural University reported course-specific increases of eleven to eighteen per cent. Attribution is disputed and some people in the sector are rightly cautious about it.
What is not disputed is that more people want into agricultural education than there are structured routes for, and that a partnership of this kind is one of the few things that converts attention into places, placements and paid work.
That is the honest reason a university would be interested, and it is a better reason than the research access.
