The Levels.
A parish that has to be firm about starting on time, because it meets in a cider barn and the arithmetic of that is obvious to everybody.
The ground it covers.
The Somerset Levels, the Mendip fringe and the moor from Glastonbury to Bridgwater. The boundary follows the landscape rather than the county line, which is why it looks wrong on an administrative map and right on a soil one.
It meets last Friday of the month, 7pm. A cider barn near Langport, which is exactly as good and exactly as unproductive as it sounds.
Rosie Coombe is the warden. Cider orchard of forty-one trees, all of which she can name. Chairs a meet with a firm hand. The wardenship is unpaid, was not appointed by us, and can only be ended by the parish itself.

Everything on this page is the parish’s own, published by its warden. We host it and we do not write it.
What it actually does.
Cider pressing
A shared press, October and November. Members bring apples and leave with juice.
Orchard restoration
Three old orchards brought back over two years, with a professional pruner teaching as they go.
Flood mutual aid
A phone list that gets used properly about one winter in three, and is worth having every winter.
Withies and willow
Two basket makers who have taught about thirty members to do something useful with a rod.
The next three things in the diary.
Published by the warden. If it says nothing is in the diary, nothing is in the diary.
Monthly meet
Langport, 7pm. Pressing rota for October gets set.
Pressing day
Bring apples. Minimum forty kilos or it is not worth the setup.
Monthly meet
Langport, 7pm.
Who runs it.
One volunteer and a register. There is no third layer.

The parish
934 members, of whom about thirty-one come to any given meet, which is a completely respectable turnout for anything.
What members of this parish said.
We start at seven and we do the business by half past, for reasons anybody who has been in a cider barn will understand.
I read the minutes, I have used the lending list twice and I have never been to a meet. Nobody has ever made me feel odd about that.
