A parish built around a kitchen table and a two-hour walk, which turns out to be a better format than a village hall for people who spend all week on their own.
The ground it covers.
The North York Moors, the Cleveland Hills and the coast down to Whitby. The boundary follows the landscape rather than the county line, which is why it looks wrong on an administrative map and right on a soil one.
It meets second Sunday of the month, 2pm. A farm kitchen at the top of Bransdale, followed by a walk if the weather is not actively hostile.
Sheila Ingleby is the warden. Runs a farm shop at Kirkbymoorside. Understands queues, footfall and disappointment. The wardenship is unpaid, was not appointed by us, and can only be ended by the parish itself.

Twenty people, one table, soup. It caps naturally at about that and nobody has wanted to grow it.

Four miles across the tops. Optional, and about two thirds go.

Six beekeepers moving hives to the heather in August, comparing yields and grumbling about the weather.

Sheila answers questions about retail from people thinking of trying it. Mostly she talks them out of it.

Twenty people round a table is the right number. Thirty and it stops being a conversation.
I read the minutes, I have used the lending list twice and I have never been to a meet. Nobody has ever made me feel odd about that.
