Bruern Mill.

Stoneground flour, milled slow enough not to cook the grain. Bruern, 7 miles from the farm gate, supplying this shop since November 2021.

Miller

What they make.

Stoneground flour, milled slow enough not to cook the grain. It is a miller first and a supplier to this shop second, which is the correct order and worth stating: nothing here depends on us, and none of these businesses would close if we stopped ordering.

They have been supplying the farm shop since November 2021, which makes them one of the longer-standing relationships in a chapter where the average is about four years.

Prices are set by the producer, not by us. Where a line has a fixed retail price it is because they asked for one, which two of the nine do.

The honest bit

What went wrong. The wheat we grow here was supposed to come back as flour under our own name. It did, twice, and then it did not, because our wheat comes off at a protein and a Hagberg that suits a feed contract rather than a bread grist, and pretending otherwise makes bad bread. We ran "milled from Diddly Squat wheat" on the packet for one season longer than was strictly true of every bag. It now says which harvest a bag came from, and in the years the grain is not good enough the line simply does not exist.

Sixteen miles, and what that actually means here.
The radius

Sixteen miles, and what that actually means here.

This producer is 7 miles from the shop door. Under the planning condition that governs what the farm shop may sell, that is what makes them stockable at all — not the quality, not the story, and not whether they photograph well.

It is worth being blunt about the consequence: if they moved twenty miles away we could not sell their food, however good it was. The rule takes no view on merit.

Snooping, briefly.

We use a small number of cookies to keep your basket upright and to work out which pages people actually read. We do not sell anything about you to anyone, because that would be a rotten way to behave.
