Being told

Two messages a year.

One when the first lamb arrives and one when the combine goes into the first field. That is the entire notification service, and expanding it is not on any roadmap.

Through the lens

Why there are only two.

The obvious product here is an alert system: tell me when anything happens on any camera. It would be straightforward to build and it would be uninstalled within a fortnight, because on a farm the honest answer to "has anything happened" is almost always no.

A notification you learn to ignore is worse than no notification at all. It trains people to dismiss the one message that mattered, which on this estate is the one that says lambing has started.

So there are two. They are the two moments in the farming year that are genuinely worth interrupting somebody for, and if we ever find a third we will say so on this page before we send it.

The whole service

What you can actually turn on.

Lambing has started

One message, in the middle of March, when the first lamb of the season is on the camera. It is the most useful thing this section sends.

Harvest has started

One message, in late July, when the combine goes into the first field and the weighbridge starts recording.

A camera is down for more than a day

Optional, off by default, and mostly of interest to schools who have built a lesson around a feed.

Nothing else

No weekly digest, no highlights round-up, no "you have not watched a hedge in a while".

The specification

How notification works here.

Data kept
An address and four switchesIn this build, nothing leaves your browser.

This is a demonstration build. The controls on this page are real interface and send nothing, because there is no mail server behind them.

The permission prompt does not fire on page load

A website that asks for push permission before you have read a sentence has told you what kind of website it is. Ours asks only when you switch something on, which means most people never see the prompt at all.

The two moments

What the two messages are actually about.

One camera in March, one in July. Everything else you find in your own time.

Being told

In short.

Two a year

Lambing, and harvest. That is the service.

Email or push

No SMS, no app, no third channel.

One-click off

No confirmation, no retention screen, no follow-up.

Nothing sold

The address is used for these messages and nothing else.

The estate list

The two messages, and nothing else.

One in March when the first lamb arrives. One in late July when the combine goes in. If we ever want to send a third we will ask first.

  • Lambing has started
  • Harvest has started
  • No digest, no round-up, no reminders
