The only camera that tells you the year

The Weighbridge.

A trailer goes on, a number appears, the trailer comes off. Do that two hundred times in three weeks and you have the year’s result, which is why this is the most consequential camera on the estate and the least interesting to look at.

The only camera that tells you the year

What it is actually pointed at.

Every load of grain leaving a field crosses this plate. The weight, the moisture and the field it came from go into the harvest record, and by the end of August the record is the only honest account of what the year did.

In 2025 that account was grim. Wheat down about thirty per cent, barley down about forty, durum under two tonnes a hectare against an expected six. A planned thirty-seven thousand pound profit became a loss of roughly five thousand. This camera watched all of it happen, one trailer at a time.

That is the argument for the whole of Gawping in a single frame. A television programme is cut. A weighbridge is not.

Timing it

Worth watching when.

WhenWhat you get
Harvest, 09:00 until dark Loads crossing. Perhaps one every twenty minutes on a good day.
A wet afternoon Nothing. The combine stops when the moisture goes up and so does everything else.
Late August The last load, which nobody films and everybody remembers.
Out of harvest A stamped still, and the season’s totals under it.
Seasoning

Across the year, on this camera.

January to June

Idle.

The plate gets swept and that is the extent of it.

July

Barley first, usually, and the first real number of the year.

August

Wheat, and the three weeks that decide the whole thing.

September

The tail end, then the totals go up on the archive page.

Uptime is the rolling ninety-day figure. When the stream is not available this page shows the last good frame instead: Out of harvest it is a still, with the season’s tonnage printed underneath.

The rules

The four things every camera here promises.

Fixed

No pan, tilt or zoom for anybody outside the farm office.

Silent

No audio on this camera or any other.

Pointed at us

No footpath, no neighbour’s land, no public highway in frame.

Fallback

Out of harvest it is a still, with the season’s tonnage printed underneath.

What is worth watching this month.

A table of the whole year, camera by camera, so you are not opening ten tabs to find the one with something in it.
